Holy Tamale it has been forever since I posted a blog, probably the longest stretch since I started this blog almost three years ago. Lots has been going on under this roof in the past 30 or so days. Our Internet has been going crazy ever since we got our iphones two months ago, well we finally figured out the problem this morning and we are good to go! Enough driving to Panera Bread every morning to get my emails loaded and time to catch up on my blogging as well as reading other blogs!
Last week, Bronx had surgery in Kansas City at Children's Mercy Hospital. Hopefully the last for a very long time. For those of you that don't know Bronx was born with six fingers on his right hand, he had two thumbs (medically known as Polydactyly or an extra digit). One in 500 babies is born with an extra digit. I was totally freaked out at first when I realized it when he was born thinking I had done something wrong while I was pregnant. Only to find out I had nothing to do with it and it was all genetics and God playing a role in the creation of his little hand. His little hand is one of the cutest things I have ever seen and has really grown on me, though we all know how mean kids can be when Bronx gets older so we opted to take it off at an early age. Nick and I called his extra thumb 'Ole Lucky!
Nick and I researched pediatric doctors all over the country only to find one three hours north of where we live. Dr. John Rast is a pediatric general surgeon as well as a plastic surgeon who has specialized in hand surgery, bingo! We found our guy! Bronx was supposed to have surgery when he was six months old but because of his condition at the time they wanted to wait a little longer. He did great last week and has the cutest little cast on his hand. We made sure it was blue, because that that is Lunden's favorite color and the top half had little cars wrapped around it. Which of course Lunden thought was pretty cool!
The night before surgery, you can see his double thumb for one of the very last times!
He is doing great, but still has a little road ahead of him. He will have pain for the next 10-12 days. Some hours of the day he is crazy as ever and crawls and walks around everything and then there are hours of the day where he just wants to be held and rocked once the pain medicine wears off. All in all he is doing great and will only have his cast on for three weeks.
All prepped for surgery, it's 2:00 and he hasn't had anything to eat since 6am! His little tummy was growling so daddy took him for a walk.
Even though this surgery was considered a minor surgery, being in that surgery waiting room brought back way too many emotional memories of the first four months of Bronx's life. I will say I truly believe this little guy has a huge reason for being on this earth and will always be one of the strongest human beings I will ever know. It is amazing what these little guys can go through at such an early age and bounce back like nothing ever happened. Only to look back at pictures or past blogs and every emotion comes back from that exact moment.
Still waiting for surgery, he loved playing with Buzz because brother always takes if from him. We also blew a ton of bubbles which pretty much saved the two hour wait we had once we were prepped before surgery.
The drive on the way home, check out his little cast so darn cute! I even talked the doctor into leaving his little gown on for the ride home since it was so hot and none of his shirts would fit over his little cast! He looked so cute even though he was heavily medicated.
Thanks for all of the prayers and warm thoughts that were and have been sent Bronx's way!
